What happened to the Citroen Berlingo Multispace? The versatile MPV which could carry five passengers (or seven dependant on configuration) was one of the most popular choices for adventurous family. Today we discover its replacement, why the Multispace moniker was dropped and what is “all-new” in the all-new Citroen Berlingo.
Why was the Multispace so-called?
Citroen’s iconic and flexible Berlingo MPV was named Multispace because it was exactly that!
- Multi-functional
- Multiple storage compartments
- Multi-functional roof
- A multitude of ways to use the space within it
- hence “Multispace”
This clever use of space and modularity have moved on to its replacement but the name has been refined; much like the vehicle itself. The name Citroen Berlingo Multispace is more than a mouthful and the reliable and dynamic name was kept.
What about the Citroen Berlingo Van?
Great news for our business customers: the Citroen Berlingo van is bigger and bolder than ever. In fact, around the same time the Citroen Berlingo was released, its van counterpart was hitting the roads… in a BIG WAY!
Citroen Berlingo Van has already won International Van of the Year for its innovations, space and economy.
Citroen Berlingo (the new Multispace) has now won the Autobest Best Buy Car of Europe 2019. Voted by 31 judges from 31 countries, the new Citroen Berlingo took down all of its rivals.
Impressed with the space and practicality of this new vehicle, the judges made their votes based on a number criteria including:
- Value for money
- Design
- Comfort
- Technology
- Service Quality
- Availability of spare parts
Why is Citroen Berlingo called a Leisure Activity Vehicle?
The Citroen Berlingo Leisure Activity Vehicle is so-called because of its ability to take the rougher living of daily life. Whilst SUVs and MPVs are traditionally focused on driver comfort above all else, a Leisure Activity Vehicle is based upon your family’s daily life. Be it work, fun, adventure or long arduous journeys, the Citroen Berlingo can take you, your family and your ever-growing collection of luggage there.
Available in 2 lengths, the Citroen Berlingo is either 4.4 metres or 4.75 metres long. It can carry either 5 or 7 passengers in comfort and glass surrounds you, offering an unparalleled driving position. Roof bars are attached to each and every Citroen Berlingo to take roof boxes, kayaks, bicycles and more.
The extremely clever roof storage areas can keep the floor clear of clutter and the boot space in the Medium version (M) can hold as much as 775 litres. Fold down the rear seats and you’ll be greeted with a completely flat loading space, a load length of over 3 metres (in the XL version) and up to 4,000 litres for your luggage. Not many family cars can claim this level of flexibility.
Twin sliding doors finishes off this perfectly accessible vehicle making for easy access and less car park dings from the more energetic members of your family.

For those seeking a more economical drive, the new Citroen Berlingo can be fitted with a BlueHDi diesel which offers better MPG figures.
New Citroen Berlingo can be fitted with an EAT8 8-speed automatic transmission which offers extremely comfortable gear changes and the ability to include Active Cruise Control (where the vehicle will brakes will activate accordingly when a queue is ahead, and regain speed when the road is all-clear). It’s another step closer to fully-autonomous driving, brought to you by Citroen.
New Citroen Berlingo – the replacement to Multispace
Whilst the name Multispace has been dropped from the lineup, the Berlingo Leisure Activity Vehicle takes all that was great about the Multispace and raises the bar significantly. With more technology, features, better economy and flexibility, the new Citroen Berlingo is a car for the adventurous family. The one which is not dominated by the living room and Netflix. The car for the family that loves life!
So what happened to the Citroen Berlingo Multispace? It grew up! It got better and added more features. Despite the name change, it is still all about the multitude of ways to explore the road not taken.
