Citroen takes car design to a whole new level with their recent reveal of the Citroen Oli concept. Taking the ethos from the ever-popular Ami and adding ingenuity, a bold design and some clever technology choices that promotes how far ahead Citroen is looking.
Design of a new concept car starts with a single philosophy; one that directs the designer to fulfil a vision. In Oli’s case, it was “How can we make electric go further”?
The answer is surprisingly simple in words but incredibly difficult in practice: reduce weight! Batteries are the big contributor to most car’s bulk. Batteries are heavy but by reducing the size of these, this decreases range. Citroen’s solution? Put this new concept car on a diet. Strip out the unnecessary and compliment with clever technologies to let the Oli shine above others.
Smart Design Seat
Constructed using 80% less parts than other car seats, they are made with recycled materials. Only three parts make up the seat which is super comfy, super light and super eco-friendly. They let in natural light and can be customised to suit.
Light Honeycomb roof and bonnet
The innovative light honeycomb roof and bonnet are surprisingly made of cardboard, yet tougher than metal. The light rigid and strong panels ensure that adults can stand on them without any fear and offers up to a 50% reduction of weight when compared to traditional steel roof panels.
The distinct new front windscreen
There is nothing on the road with a windscreen like this. Design to be made using the smallest amount of glass possible, the construction (along with the side air vents) actually increases the efficiency of the air conditioning.
A dashboard powered by your phone
A traditional modern vehicle houses multiple screens, hidden computers and more. Oli reduces these by over 50% by introducing a revolutionary new way of using the computer you carry with you.
A single electrified rail covers the dash which allows the driver to insert their phone and whilst charging, merge with the system onboard to become the sound system, onboard computer and more. No more merging contacts. Even the sound system features removable Bluetooth speakers for the best sound whilst saving even more weight.
Interchangeable Recycled and recyclable parts
Many parts in the Citroen Oli are recycled, recyclable (something many manufacturers ignore) and more importantly, interchangeable. Using the philosophy of the Ami, the Oli allows its doors, seating, bumpers and more to be swapped out, replaced and are completely symmetrical to ensure lower cost and have less of a carbon footprint during production.
The reduction of energy consumption and weight
All of these clever features and ground-breaking design add up to a powerful electric Citroen that whilst it has been on a diet, is in no way compromised. The strength of the construction, the interchangeable parts, the clever, simple seating system and the unique instrumentation mean that this new concept isn’t just for show.
Will Citroen Oli be released?
Unfortunately, Citroen have revealed that Oli will stay as a concept vehicle but have highlighted that each of the technology and features on show will influence other upcoming vehicles. If the world is committing to electrically powered vehicles then it’s time to consider how to maximise the range and legacy of them.
Oli – and introduction to the new brand logo and Citroen’s future
Keen readers will notice that the Citroen Oli is the first vehicle to showcase the new Citroen brand logo. In this vehicle, it houses the electric connection to charge the vehicle. With it’s cute nose logo, clever technology and quirky design, the future is looking very bright for Citroen. We can’t wait to reveal the next production car to come from the iconic manufacturer.
